Overview
In accordance with the objectives set forth in its Constitution, the Aero Club of New England has established a scholarship program to encourage and help support careers within aviation. All scholarships are awarded annually and recipients are selected on the basis of merit and need. ACONE's growing scholarship program provides a wonderful way for the Club and donors to assist deserving young people and to forge lasting relationships that can provide inspiration and support. Thanks to all that have worked to make this important part of ACONE a continued success.

Sources of Funding
Like any charitable endeavor, the ACONE Scholarship Fund is dependent upon the generosity of its benefactors for support. Member donations, the annual Scholarship Auction, and the annual Summer Solstice Hangar Cookout are the primary sources of funding for these scholarships. In addition, some people have chosen to fund a named scholarship to honor a friend, colleague, or loved one.

We invite anyone with an interest in supporting the future of aviation to donate to the scholarship program, either directly or by participating in our fundraising events. All donations are tax deductible. We also invite you to consider endowing a new scholarship to honor someone special within your life, or to include a bequest to the ACONE Scholarship Fund as part of your estate planning. Twenty Years of Success In the spring of 1987 the Aero Club awarded its first two scholarships for advanced pilot training, with a value of $2,000 each. A mere nineteen years later, thanks to the hard work of the Education Committee, the generosity of the membership in supporting the Scholarship Auction each year, and the generosity of specific members in donating moneys or establishing memorial scholarships, the Aero Club awarded 13 scholarships for a total of nearly $25,000 in the Spring of 2006.

2007
During 2007, ACONE will award fourteen scholarships; nine for pilot training; one for engineering at Daniel Webster College; one for aeronautics and astronautics at MIT; two for aircraft maintenance; and one as a special leadership award presented at specific FAA Aviation Career Education (ACE) camps. Crocker Snow Instrument Scholarship

Established in 1999 and funded by the Snow Family, ACONE, and friends.

Crocker Snow’s life spanned seventy years of flying in 140 makes and models of airplanes from Jenny’s to B29s. His lifetime achievements included pioneering work in military instrument flying and serving as the first and long-term Chairman of the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission. Crocker was the recipient of the Godfrey L. Cabot Award in 1976 and was named an Elder Statesman of Aviation by the National Aeronautics Association in 1987. This advanced pilot scholarship for instrument training is awarded in honor of this New England Aviation Pioneer.

Michael T. Hadik Memorial Scholarship

Katherine Kryspin and Steve Hadik started this scholarship in 2001. This scholarship is presented in memory of Michael Hadik. The award commemorates Mike’s career in aviation, as a pilot, a flight instructor, and his long time love of New England.

ACONE Honored Member Scholarship

$2,000

Established in 1995 and funded by the Aero Club of New England

This scholarship is named each year to honor a Club member who has made a significant contribution to aviation and to the Aero Club of New England.

In 1995 the first ACONE Honored Member Scholarship was given by the club. Each year this scholarship is named to honor a Club member who has been particularly active, has made a significant contribution to aviation and the Aero Club of New England and who has not otherwise been honored by the club. This is a way to say "Thank You!" to members during their lifetime.

Our unwritten policy for qualified candidates has been a) Not a member of the present board, b) has not received the Cabot Award, and c) has not been significantly or previously honored by the club. The member must be a living active ACONE member, and can not be a member of the board.

Nominations are requested annually the Honored Member Scholarship in June or July. Choices for this singular honor should be sent along with a paragraph or two stating why this member should be honored to:

Anne Bridge Baddour Scholarship

$5,000 in 2006

Established in 1999 and funded by the Aero Club of New England.

Anne Baddour was the singular founder of the Club’s scholarship program and starting the ACONE Annual Auction to raise the funds for this program. Anne is an ATP-rated pilot who recently retired from a 20-year career as a research pilot for MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory. An ACONE Board member since 1977, she chaired the Education Committee from 1985 to 1992 and was awarded the Club’s Exemplary Service Award in 1993. Anne serves on several Boards including that of Daniel Webster College and is an Associate Member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

The $2,500 Anne Bridge Baddour Scholarship for 1999 was awarded to Mr. Jason L. Zielmski of Bellingham, MA. Jason is a senior in the Aviation Flight operations program at Daniel Webster College and spent his summer as an intern at United Airlines, where he hopes to one day become a pilot. Jason had previously won the Ehlers Memorial Scholarship in 1998 for Instrument Training.

Bauer-Bisgeier Memorial Scholarship

$2,000

Established in 1997 and funded by Jeff and Shelia Bauer

Begun in 1997, this scholarship is presented in honor of Jeff Bauer’s grandparents, David and Susan Bisgeier, who embodied the ideal of the American dream. Starting from poor immigrant beginnings, by perseverance they reached levels of achievement that define scholarship. These funds are made available by Jeff and Shelia Bauer to help students achieve these same levels in their quest to become pilots.

Andrew Channing Cabot Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1997 and funded by Hal and Michelee Cabot.

The Cabot Memorial Scholarship was established in 1997 and funded annually by Hal and Michelee Cabot to celebrate the memory of their son, Andrew Channing Cabot, (1971-1993). A graduate of Deerfield Academy, Andrew was a poet, singer, and keyboard musician, writing original pieces for productions in both high school and college. Andrew and his ‘Varsity Band’ also produced a locally well received CD. At Emory University he was elected to the National Theater Honor Society for his acting and his contributions to musical theater. As well as logging many right seat hours with his parents over the years, Andrew was a student pilot. Once while on an IFR to VFR climb out in a spectacular skyscraper he gazed awestruck and said, "Wow! God really must love pilots best!"

Bonita Connors Memorial Scholarship

$500

Established in 1995 and funded by the North Andover Hangar Association, this scholarship was increased to $1000 in 2005, and to $1500 in 2006.

Bonita M. "Bunny" Connors was an airline-rated pilot from Haverhill, MA. After a career as a respiratory therapist at several local hospitals, Bunny chose to pursue her lifelong dream of flying. She quickly became a very popular flight instructor enthusiastically sharing her love of flight with her students. She became a commercial pilot, who regrettably was killed flying freight in the Midwest during an ice storm — a flight Bunny had taken under duress and against her better judgment.

Charles and Arlene Ehlers Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1994 and funded by the Aero Club of New England for Instrument Pilot Training

This scholarship was established in 1994 and funded by the Aero Club of New England for Instrument Pilot Training. It honors a couple who actively participated in and contributed to the Aero Club of New England. An Advisor to the Board, "Chuck" was a senior executive with the W. R. Grace Company and a member of several Boards of Directors. He and Arlene shared a strong interest in music and were active with the Concord, MA Orchestra. An instrument-rated pilot, Chuck embraced aviation with enthusiasm and a commitment to safety. He and Arlene thoroughly enjoyed the pleasures of flying. The award recipient should intend to stay active in aviation, whether as a vocation or as a private pilot.

John T. Griffin, Sr. Scholarship

Established in 1992 and funded by the Aero Club of New England for Aviation Maintenance Technology

The Aero Club of New England lost one of its most famous and loved members during 1999. This scholarship now in Memory of John Griffin, Sr. was established in 1992 and funded annually by the Aero Club of New England for a student in Aviation Maintenance Technology at East Coast Aero Tech. John T. Griffin, Sr., a former President of the Aero Club and a pioneer transatlantic pilot, founded East Coast AeroTechnical School in 1932 and served as its President until 1975. He was also Chief Pilot and Operations Manager for Northeast Airlines. Mr. Griffin was the 1977 recipient of the Godfrey Lowell Cabot Award in1977, and was named an Elder Statesman of Aviation by the National Aeronautic Association

The Aero Club of New England/Julius Goldman Leadership Award

The Aero Club of New England/Julius Goldman Leadership award for two hundred dollars. This scholarship is only available to campers involved with the FAA's ACE Camp program, in New England. The award is presented to one camper in each of the six New England states. The recipient of the award is determined by the ACE camp director, their staff, and the Education Committee of the Aero Club of New England. This award is based on the following criterion; problem solving, organizational skills, interpersonal skills, forcefulness, flexibility, willingness to lead, acceptance of responsibility, and motivation. Demonstration of these attributes is consistent with the ideals and leadership established by the Aero Club.

Lockhart Smith, Jr. Scholarship

Established in 1987 and funded by the Dean S. Edmonds Foundation, for Aeronautics at Daniel Webster College

In 1987 the Lockhart Smith, Jr. Scholarship was established and has been funded by the Dean S.Edmonds Foundation, for students studying Aeronautical Engineering at Daniel Webster College. Lockhart Smith served in the Naval Air Service during WWII After the war he attended East Coast. AeroTech and worked at Revere Airport. From 1956 to 1968, Lockhart taught at Wentworth Institute ofTechnology, and is currently Professor Emeritus. A long time ACONE member, Lockhart is an Advisor, Chair of the House and Library Committee, and is active in the Cabot Award, Education arid Auction Committees. Lockhart was awarded the Brewer Trophy Award. by NAA for service to aviation education

Ann Wood-Kelly Scholarship

Established in 1987 and funded by the Aero Club of New England

The Anne Wood-Kelly scholarship was one of the inaugural awards and has been given each year since 1987. The Aero Club of New England funds it annually to honor its noted World War II aviatrix. Ann served during the war by flying the only way an American woman could - with the British Air Transport Auxiliary. From 1942 to 1945 she ferried over 75 types of aircraft from factories in England to bases in Britain and the continent. Ann later became Pan American Airways first female Vice President. In 1965, Ann also became ACONE’s first female president. In 1996 the Aero Club honored her with the Godfrey L. Cabot Award. Ann has an active interest in aviation and the Aero Club, and maintains her instrument rating.
